Source Protection Initiatives

MECP Director Approved, 0.4 CEU, 4 hour course

Source protection has come to the forefront as an important segment of the drinking water industry. No longer is the approach to singularly protect a particular well. The current view is to take the entire watershed into account, a view that transcends political boundaries requiring co-operation between a variety of stakeholders throughout the watershed.

Watershed characteristics, both natural and man-made, must be fully understood so that impacts to the security of the watershed are minimal or non-existent. This course explores in depth topics such as the multi barrier approach, delineation of wellhead protection areas, technical assessment reports, bedrock and surface geology, the importance of water conservation and the role of woodland and vegetated areas in a watershed.
